The Flipper Zero team has recently unveiled its proprietary ‘Flipper Apps’ mobile app store, a significant move that allows users to install third-party apps and augment the capabilities of the popular wireless penetration testing tool.

Flipper Zero is a versatile, portable tool that enables penetration testers and hacking enthusiasts to experiment with a broad spectrum of hardware using RFID emulation, digital access key cloning, radio communications, NFC, infrared, Bluetooth, and more. Despite the controversy it has stirred up, with videos showing it being used to open garage doors, unlock cars, clone RFID chips, and trigger doorbells, it continues to be a potent educational and security research tool when used responsibly.

The introduction of the Flipper Apps app store marks a significant milestone for the Flipper Zero community. Users can now effortlessly install apps specifically designed and verified to work on the device. This is a considerable improvement from the previous situation where users had to source apps for the device independently, typically from code repositories like GitHub, and load them onto the device via a microSD card. The new mobile app store allows owners to easily browse through the available and tested apps and install them on their devices.

The Flipper Zero team proudly announced that over 350,000 customers use Flipper Zero to interact with wireless devices, such as IoT sensors, TVs, ACs, and access control systems like garage doors, boom barriers, remote keyless systems, and RFID card systems. The launch of Flipper Apps enables users to extend their devices’ functionality with custom applications.

The new app store is integrated into the latest Flipper Zero mobile apps for Android and iOS. It currently offers 101 apps, including games, hex editors, fuzzers, universal remotes, NFC apps, and GPIO apps. Some of the highlighted apps include Flipper Authenticator, Flipper Air Mouse, a variety of games adapted for Flipper Zero’s screen, Temp sensor readers, Xbox Controller, Multi Fuzzer, and Seader.

Despite facing challenges in certain national markets, such as Brazil, and on online platforms like Amazon, where it’s categorized as a card skimming tool, Flipper Zero’s popularity as a portable penetration testing device remains unrivaled. The introduction of Flipper Apps is set to broaden its user base, attracting more mainstream audiences and further cementing its market presence and success.
